A fossil assemblage containing molluscs, mammals, insects, ostracodes, and plants has been recovered from a silt-filled depression near Lima, in west-central Illinois. The reversed remanent magnetic signature of the sediments and the temporal ranges of two mammals, Microtus paroperarius and Lasiopodomys deceitensis, constrain the age of the assemblage to between 730,000 and 830,000 yr B.P. The extent of isoleucine epimerization in the molluscan shell is consistent with this age interpretation. The fauna includes at least 43 taxa of beetles from 11 families, 35 nominal species of molluscs, and two genera of ostracodes. The mammals include two shrews, three rodents, and a rabbit. The plant macrofossils (no pollen recovered) include 25 species of seed plants and four kinds of terrestrial or wetland mosses. Most of the plant species identified still occur in the upper Midwest, although a few of the taxa are found mainly to the north of the site. The fauna is characterized by an almost total absence of true aquatic taxa. The association of both boreal and thermophilous faunal and floral elements suggest that summer temperatures were not greatly different from present ones, but cooler, moist areas must have been available to support the boreal elements. Local conditions were probably similar to those now found in northeastern Iowa, where rains blocks, fissures, and joints in carbonate bedrock serve as traps for debris accumulations, provide shade, and are kept cool and moist during the hot summer months by cold-air drainage and groundwater seepage. Summer mean temperature in these microhabitats was probably between 18 and 20°C, similar to temperatures that now occur near the northern hardwood spruce-fir transition in the eastern United States.

Large-scale furrows occurring in unconsolidated Quaternary sediments on the Labrador Shelf are considered to be gouge marks of bottom-dragging icebergs. Side-scan sonograph mosaics from the northern Labrador Shelf were constructed for two bathymetric interbank areas. They reveal that both relict ice bottom gouging and modern iceberg scouring have taken place at water depths greater than 180 m. The recent scours are linear to curvilinear to crater-like in form, with average widths of 30 m at a mean scour depth of 5 m and lengths in excess of 3 km. The dominant scour trend is north-south, reflecting the Labrador Current.
Impedance of icebergs by bottom interaction is primarily a function of the gross iceberg size and shape, sediment encountered by the keel, and prevailing current. For modern scouring, frequencies of detectable impact decrease exponentially with increasing scour depth, and scour depth is inversely proportional to the sediment shear and compressive strengths.

Objective: Several studies have provided prevalence estimates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to the September 11, 2001 (9/11) attacks in broadly affected populations, although without sufficiently addressing qualifying exposures required for assessing PTSD and estimating its prevalence. A premise that people throughout the New York City area were exposed to the attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) towers and are thus at risk for developing PTSD has important implications for both prevalence estimates and service provision. This premise has not, however, been tested with respect to DSM-IV-TR criteria for PTSD. This study examined associations between geographic distance from the 9/11 attacks on the WTC and reported 9/11 trauma exposures, and the role of specific trauma exposures in the development of PTSD.
Methods: Approximately 3 years after the attacks, 379 surviving employees (102 with direct exposures, including 65 in the towers, and 277 with varied exposures) recruited from 8 affected organizations were interviewed using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule/Disaster Supplement and reassessed at 6 years. The estimated closest geographic distance from the WTC towers during the attacks and specific disaster exposures were compared with the development of 9/11–related PTSD as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition, Text Revision.
Results: The direct exposure zone was largely concentrated within a radius of 0.1 mi and completely contained within 0.75 mi of the towers. PTSD symptom criteria at any time after the disaster were met by 35% of people directly exposed to danger, 20% of those exposed only through witnessed experiences, and 35% of those exposed only through a close associate’s direct exposure. Outside these exposure groups, few possible sources of exposure were evident among the few who were symptomatic, most of whom had preexisting psychiatric illness.
Conclusions: Exposures deserve careful consideration among widely affected populations after large terrorist attacks when conducting clinical assessments, estimating the magnitude of population PTSD burdens, and projecting needs for specific mental health interventions.

The metacyclic form of African trypanosomes is the first to express genes for the Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG) and it uses an unusually predictable subset of the VSG gene repertoire. We have developed a model system for the analysis of metacyclic VSG (M-VSG) gene expression and have used this to demonstrate that, for two M-VSG genes, different modes of expression operate in the insect and mammalian phases of the life-cycle. In metacyclic-derived clones, these genes are expressed in situ, whereas they are routinely activated by duplication in bloodstream trypanosomes. The expression loci for both M-VSG genes studied are structurally simple and we present a model, based on this, for the maintenance of a separate M-VSG repertoire and expression system.

The Fourier-Kelvin Stellar Interferometer (FKSI) is a mission concept for a spacecraft-borne imaging and nulling interferometer for the near to mid-infrared spectral region. FKSI is a scientific and technological pathfinder to the Darwin and Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) missions and will be a high angular resolution system complementary to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). There are four key scientific issues the FKSI mission is designed to address. These are: 1.) characterization of the atmospheres of the known extra-solar giant planets, 2.) assay of the morphology of debris disks to look for resonant structures characteristic of the presence of extrasolar planets, 3.) study of circumstellar material around a variety of stellar types to better understand their evolutionary state, and in the case of young stellar systems, their planet forming potential, and 4.) measurement of detailed structures inside active galactic nuclei. We report results of simulation studies of the imaging capabilities of the FKSI, current progress on our nulling testbed, results from control system and residual jitter analysis, and selection of hollow waveguide fibers for wavefront cleanup.

There is great potential for the use of nanostructures in numerous applications. Investigation of nanoparticle films and structures is an important area of research for the production of nanoengineered devices. However, for these devices to become a reality, a production method that can yield high-rate synthesis of nanostructured powders is necessary. The hypersonic plasma particle deposition (HPPD) process has been shown to be capable of such high-rate production of nanoparticle films and structures. Versatile in its ability to manufacture nanoparticles of different chemistries HPPD also has the capability of in situ particle consolidation and assembly. In this study, chemically diverse films and structures have been produced by HPPD on a variety of substrates. Using novel specimen preparation techniques, these nanoparticles have been characterized by TEM. Fundamental issues of importance have been investigated for both the nanoparticle structure and the constituent nanoparticles. These issues include nanoparticle crystallinity and defect structure. The chemical homogeneity and structural characteristics of the deposition are also investigated. This application of microscopy to aid process development has resulted in insights into the nanoparticle formation process and the dynamics of the HPPD process.

The effects of heat-induced interactions between milk fat globule membrane components and skim milk proteins in whole milk on the structure of the membrane were examined by isopycnic sucrose density gradient centrifugation and by using Triton X-100 as a membrane probe. Skim milk components were incorporated into all the lipoprotein fractions separated by density gradient centrifugation. High density complexes, higher in density than those found in the natural milk fat globule membrane, were formed during the heat treatment. Losses of natural membrane polypeptides from the medium and low density lipoproteins were observed on heating. Heating whole milk also altered the rate of release of membrane components by detergent, with decreases in protein released and an increase in phospholipid constituents released. Studies on washed cream indicated that some of the changes in the membrane on heating whole milk occurred due to the heat treatment alone, independent of the interactions with skim milk proteins.

Heating raw milk at 80 °C for 2·5–20 min was found to result in compositional changes in the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). The yield of protein material increased with the duration of heating, owing to incorporation of skim milk proteins, predominantly β-lactoglobulin, into the membrane. Lipid components of the MFGM were also affected, with losses of triacylglycerols on heating.

In 1984, scientists isolated a new pathogen, now called human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), that is almost certainly the etiological agent for the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It has been estimated that there are between 500,000 and 1,750,000 asymptomatic, chronically HIV-infected individuals in the United States. In a remarkably short time, investigators developed a number of blood tests that indicate whether an individual is likely to be infected with this virus. These assays are now being used to test patients with symptoms suggesting AIDS or related syndromes, to screen donated blood, to evaluate individuals concerned about their infection status, and to screen new military recruits, active-duty soldiers, and ROTC students. Almost weekly, new proposals are advanced for screening different subsets of the population.

Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) material was isolated from commercial pasteurized milks and pasteurized creams using a procedure specifically adapted for these products (McPherson et al. 1984a). Pasteurized cream membranes contained higher lipid levels while pasteurized milk membrane material had lower lipid contents than fresh raw MFGM. Electrophoretic analysis showed that membrane material from both commercial products contained, in addition to native MFGM polypeptides, significant amounts of β-lactoglobulin with lower levels of caseins and other skim-milk components. The incorporation of β-lactoglobulin was more pronounced in pasteurized cream membranes. Examination of the lipoprotein complexes present in these membrane preparations by linear sucrose density gradient centrifugation showed that pasteurized milk membrane material had a similar profile to fresh raw MFGM except that preferential binding of skim-milk components was found in some of the lipoprotein fractions. Pasteurized cream membranes showed considerably different density gradient patterns with only 2 lipoprotein fractions present, of which the major one was a low density complex.

The material surrounding the fat globules in commercial pasteurized homogenized milk was isolated by centrifugation of the freeze – thaw extract of the fat globules through a 52·5% (w/v) sucrose solution in simulated milk ultrafiltrate. The purified membrane material contained higher neutral lipid levels than fresh raw milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) material. Caseins and whey proteins, mainly β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) were found to be the major protein components of homogenized milk membrane material. Native MFGM polypeptides comprised only a small proportion of the total protein in these membranes. The total amount of membrane material isolated from homogenized milk was substantially higher than that from fresh raw milk. Analysis of homogenized milk membrane material by linear sucrose density gradient centrifugation showed a different pattern to that found with other milks, indicating the presence of new lipoprotein complexes. Commercial ultra heat treated (UHT) milks were also examined, but it was difficult to obtain isolated MFGM material free from core fat. However, fat globule fractions were isolated from these products by high speed centrifugation and these were analysed intact. Membrane material in these milks contained caseins and whey proteins (mainly β-1g). Natural MFGM polypeptides were present at extremely low levels. Phospholipid levels in UHT milk membranes were greatly reduced compared with membrane material isolated from other milks.

Bovine milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) material was isolated from cream by a new technique which did not involve removal of caseins and whey proteins before destabilization of the fat globules. These components were removed by centrifugation of the membrane material extract through a concentrated sucrose solution (52·5% (w/v) sucrose in 10 mM-Tris HCl buffer, pH 7·5). Membranes collected at the sample–sucrose interface, while whey proteins remained in the supernatant and caseins migrated into the concentrated sucrose solution. The yield of membrane material using this procedure was 25% less than that from conventional methods. This reduced yield was due mainly to lower levels of lipid material, in particular triglyceride. Electrophoretic analysis showed that the polypeptide composition of ‘unwashed’ membrane material was similar to that of conventionally prepared MFGM. This method is particularly suitable for the isolation of membrane material from milks and dairy products in which the fat globule stability is reduced or unknown.
